Volunteer in Croatia

The beautiful, Mediterranean country of Croatia consists of over 1,000 tiny islands sprinkled throughout the Adriatic coast. In recent years, it has become one of the top tourist destinations in Europe. The country boasts a gorgeous, rocky coastline with deep blue waters, and a relaxed, fisherman-town atmosphere. Despite being a slow paced country, Croatia has a strong national history and culture due to its location between Eastern and Western Europe. The majority of volunteer opportunities in Croatia lie in natural preservation and community and infrastructural development. If you are looking to experience the relaxed lifestyle of the Adriatic coast while helping communities in need, then Croatia is the place for you.

Croatia, is more or less a remote region. The capital city of Zagreb is by far the largest, with a population of about 700,000. In Zagreb, you will find the majority of volunteer opportunities. Other cities such as Rijeka, Osijek and Split, are more remote with populations of about 100,000 people. The sparse population of the country is what makes this country magical: the medieval architecture lining the city streets combined with the unrivaled beauty of the coast makes this country a gem of the Mediterranean. The many islands also have small populations, making the locals seasoned island-hoppers.

Outside the cities, there are many volunteer projects aimed at preserving the natural environment. One project that is particularly popular is working to conserve native species such as the bottlenose dolphin and brown bear populations. Because the land’s terrain is so adventure-friendly, most volunteer organizations combine work with fun. The territory is perfect for kayaking and hiking, and the country’s location makes it easy to access the rest of Eastern Europe for travel.

Volunteer in Croatia and experience the relaxed, yet adventurous, way of life on the Adriatic Coast and help revive the local environment and community. But be warned, you may fall in love with the friendly smiles, laidback attitude and beach views; the challenge lies in going back home!
