Volunteer in Laos
Surrounded by destinations such as Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, China, and Myanmar, Laos is a Southeast Asian country overflowing with a multitude of different ethnicities, diverse landscapes, fascinating and culturally unique historical and cultural sites and stunning natural attractions. Volunteering in Laos means immersing oneself in a particularly tranquil way of life and embracing a more rural approach to living. Visiting this largely Buddhist country will also afford volunteers the opportunity to travel to and explore an abundance of famous sites and temples including the likes of Buddha Park, Pha That Luang and Vat Phou.
In addition, volunteering in Laos allows volunteers to discover an off-the-beaten-track nation who are best known for their gracious and warm demeanour.
UNESCO’s World Heritage site, Luang Prabang - in the heart of the mountains and lying at the intersection of the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers is a must see on any visitor’s travel itinerary. The ancient capital of the Luang Prabang Province offers a variety of different volunteering projects and the community always welcomes assistance from international volunteers. Participants who volunteer in Luang Prabang will enjoy visiting the well - preserved building and temples - displaying both traditional and colonial architecture.
Despite being the biggest city in Laos, Vientiane is not your typical big city and has a far more relaxed atmosphere than what we may associate with urban centers. Located on the famous Mekong river, bordering Thailand, projects in Vientiane are often focused on community development and social progress - including assistance in education.
Some of the rural villages in and around Laos are key areas for volunteering and projects in these areas usually involve volunteer work in various fields.
If education is an area you are interested in, many volunteer placements in Laos will welcome you with open arms and hearts. Teaching English to Buddhist monks or developing arts and culture activities for children are just some of the ways you can contribute to the lives of these indigenous communities. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities in Laos teaching English to people of all ages while at the same time encouraging creativity and freedom in the youth of the communities.
Community development is another focus area for volunteers and hands-on construction projects are always looking for volunteers to help out. Activities could include repairing and restoring existing structures, like fences, door or windows or even aiding in the nurturing of farming areas.
Volunteering abroad in Laos will definitely be a challenge but without a doubt a rewarding experience that will stay with your forever.
